In my leadership programs, leaders have this common question - How do we know that the choices that we are making are right or wrong?
My take for these leaders is
There is nothing right or wrong about choices. Making choices is subjective. What may be wrong for one could be wrong for another.
Choices are always in your hands, but the consequences are not. For example, taking an umbrella is your choice; whether it rains or not is not. In corporate, if you are an entrepreneur, manager, or leader, creating a culture of shared vision, empathy, community feeling, and systems that help govern behavior is in your hands. Whether an employee wants to stay or not is not in your hands.
Some ground rules
1. Quantify your definitions of the choices you make
2. Have compassion for self and others when you make a choice
3. Use tools. Example, a 'T diagram' if need be with pointers so it will give you a clear guidance
4. Evaluate the consequences of such choices, based on your experience and data (if you have it)
5. Most important is to check your volition to make the choice. This means you check what is your core belief before you make the decision, while implementing the decision, and after implementing the decision (in a timeline)
6. All the above requires 'practice'. Just as an Olympic athlete takes four years to qualify for the Olympics.
